(Jeremiah 1:5) “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart…”

The saying goes, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”  This saying is most often used when a person is facing what seems like an improbable task.  The sports team down by 15 with 2 minutes remaining – where there’s a will, there’s a way.  The 1,000 acres that needs to be plowed in two days – where there’s a will, there’s a way.  The three days of work that needs to be done in one – where there’s a will, there’s a way.  This saying tells you that if you look to yourself, if you try hard enough you can do anything.

But this saying does not work when it comes to your spiritual life.  You cannot will yourself to faith in God, you cannot will yourself to be perfect, you cannot will yourself to be sinless and you cannot will yourself to heaven. Left to your own efforts your will always fails.

But God’s will never fails! It was God’s will, even before you were formed in your mother’s womb, to know you – to want you!  God knew all the evil actions you would perform in your life, all the dirty thoughts that would run through your head and all the sins you would ever commit and yet He chose to set you apart!  It was His will to make you special.  It was God’s will that He bring you to faith in Him.  You were made special through the waters of holy baptism as God brought you to faith in Him – to be His child – to be a recipient of the forgiveness won by Jesus – to be an heir of everlasting life!

And so cherish this wonderful gift of faith.  Study God’s Word never to let it go and share it with others so that they may know God’s will – that He wants all to come to a knowledge of the truth and to be saved!  “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” When it comes to your spiritual life the will is God’s and the way is through Jesus alone!

Thanking God that His will was to bring me to faith in Jesus, just like it is for you and all people,

Pastor Schumann
