(1 Peter 2:9 NIV) “But you are a chosen people… a people belonging to God.”
A sense of belonging is one of the things that all people strive for. Everyone wants to belong to something. Social groups, card clubs, knitting groups, bowling teams, softball teams, science clubs, and so on thrive on the sense of “belonging” that people have. Many times when a person feels alone, has anxiety, is embarrassed, etc it is because they do feel as if they belong.
It is this sense of “not belonging” that our God never wanted us to experience. And so a little over 2,000 years ago God sent his only Son to this world, to be born of a virgin, to be placed in a manger, to live the perfect life, to die on the cross, and to rise from the grave so that you could belong to Him. Your God did all of that for you! Because your God did all of that Peter could write, “you are a chosen people… a people belonging to God.” Because of Jesus you have been given the only sense of belonging you will ever need. When you do not feel like you belong with your friends – it’s okay – you belong to Jesus, when things at work are not well and you do not feel like you belong any more – it’s okay – you belong to Jesus, when your family has been split and you no longer feel as if you belong – it’s okay – you belong to your family in heaven because of Jesus. You belong to your Savior because He wrote His name on your heart at your baptism, as He claimed you as His own, as He chose you! You belong!
And so the next time that feeling of “not belonging” comes over you go to God’s word. See what Jesus has done for you and know that you are special, know that you do belong to the most important group you could be a part of – the group of all believers – who belong to their Savior and will one day be alongside Him in heaven.
Belonging to God, just like you,
