(Mark 8:29 NIV) “But what about you?” He (Jesus) asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”
With this question Jesus was asking the disciples, and you and me, to search our hearts. Why? Because this question is of eternal importance – eternal life in heaven or eternal life in hell is what is at stake. And so Jesus is asking each of us, “Who do you say I am?”
There are many out there who answer that question with, “He was a good man.” “He was a very moral and upright human who showed us how to treat each other.” “He was a prophet who came to pave the way for the Savior.” “He was a nobody.” Many people have their opinions on who Jesus is but none of these opinions, thoughts, or answers are correct. Why? Because good men, moral humans, and prophets cannot save you, me or the world.
And so who is Jesus? Peter, in four short words, sums up beautifully exactly who Jesus is when he responds to Jesus’ question by saying, “You are the Christ.” What does the name “Christ” mean? It means “Anointed One of God.” Jesus, the Son of God, was sent by God to fulfill what the prophets wrote about Him, to suffer and die in our place, and to rise from the grave three days later guaranteeing that we too will rise from the grave. Jesus is not merely a good man or a prophet but He is also 100% true God. He is the Christ, the Anointed One of God, who has given eternal life to you and me – free, by His work on the cross. That is who Jesus is – the Savior of the world!
Confessing Jesus to be the Christ, just like Peter and just like you,
