Devotion:

While driving in southeast Kansas this summer I have continued to be shocked.  The normally lush, green corn fields of mid-July were parched and brown from drought.  The effects of too little water on the plants were not pretty.

The same is true for people who get too little spiritual water.  If you withhold the life-giving waters of God’s Word from your soul, you will feel the effects of a spiritual drought.  You may succumb to desperation, despair, anxiety, anger, and selfishness that knows no end.  It won’t be a pretty sight.

But if you hear and read and listen and meditate on God’s Word, He promises to make good things grow in your life.  He will cultivate a crop of joy, peace, patience, self-control, and contentment.  It will be a beautiful sight in His eyes, and probably in the eyes of many around you, as well.

But don’t take my word for it, take his.  This is how God pictures the benefits of drinking in his Word in Psalm 1:

1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked

or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.

Whatever he does prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!

They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish.

Watered by the Word, just like you,

Pastor Aaron Schumann
