(John 14:26 NIV) “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
Cluttered around my office are neon orange, yellow, and green post-it notes with the sole purpose of reminding me to do something. Daily my smart phone rings with “alerts” and “reminders” telling me to not forget what I had scheduled. And if post-its and cell phone reminders don’t work I always have my trusty wife at home who helps me remember.
All of us forget things. We forget appointments, we forget to pick the kids up from school, we forget our anniversary, we forget to tell our spouses we love them, and unfortunately all too often we forget the wonderful blessings our God has given us. We forget that we can rely on our God, we forget the true peace that God has given to our hearts, and we forget that our God makes even the worst things in our lives turn out for our good. In our sinfulness sometimes we forget about our God.
Thankfully our heavenly Father sends the Holy Spirit into our hearts to remind us of all the blessings he has given us. Through the hearing of the word of God and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper the Holy Spirit puts post-it notes all over our hearts reminding us of the things we sometimes forget about our God. Post-its and reminders that say, “God is love!” “God works all things for the good of those who love him!” “You are God’s child!” “You are forgiven.” “God is in control!” “God is with you to the very end of the age!” Daily the Holy Spirit reminds us of the blessings we have because of Jesus so that we never have to despair or fear because we are in our loving Father’s hands!
Never forgetting what Jesus has done for me because of the Holy Spirit just like you,
