(Mark 1:10,11 NIV) As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.  And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

As children we loved being shown affection.  We loved it when our parents would pick us up and wrap their arms around us and tell us that they loved us.  Those strong arms and those words reminded us that we were safe, that we would be taken care of, and that we were loved.  And as we have grown older maybe the hugs and the “I love you’s have become less frequent but we still long to have our loved ones approve of us.  We still want our mom’s and dad’s to be proud of us and pleased with who we have turned out to be.

And in the above verses we see that after Jesus was baptized God the Father spoke to him and gave him his approval.  He told Jesus that he loved him.  With the word “love” God the Father was expressing his complete approval of the task Jesus was going to undertake for sinful mankind.  And not only did God the Father approve of what Jesus was going to do but he was also well pleased with him.  God the Father was proud of his Son.  Jesus had not fallen into temptation, he had not sinned.  God chose the right man for the job of saving the world from their sins.  He was well pleased with his Son.  Jesus would accomplish the task he was appointed to carry out.

And because God was well pleased with his Son so also is he well pleased with you and me.  Yes, we are sinful.  Yes, we disobey our God every day.  But because of Jesus carried out the task of dying on the cross for our sins for us our God looks at you and me and he does not see our sins but instead he sees his precious sons and daughters.  Because of Jesus you and I are forgiven of all of our sins.  And because of what Jesus did for you and me on the cross when God the Father looks at us he also says, “You are my sons and daughters, whom I love, with you I am well pleased!”  And he takes us in his strong arms and he gathers us to himself never to let us go until we are with him for an eternity in heaven!

Loved by God because of Jesus just like you,

Pastor Schumann
