(Ephesians 2:8,9) “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works so that no one can boast.”
St. Augustine once said, “Grace, unless it is free, is not grace.” Webster’s Dictionary defines grace as, “something freely given.” I was taught by my pastors growing up and my Seminary professors that a good definition for grace was “undeserved love.” There are many definitions for the word “grace” but no matter what definition you look at one thing remains the same – “grace” is free!
Grace is not something you can buy; it is not something you can earn. But grace is free. It is a gift. And how great this is to know because as St. Paul tells you in the above verses that it is “by grace you have been saved, through faith.” Your salvation is FREE! Your salvation has been given to you by grace, and grace alone. And how comforting this is because if you had to earn your way to heaven, how could you ever know if you had done enough to get to heaven? You couldn’t. Your life would be filled with uncertainty until the day you died.
But thank God you don’t have to earn your way to heaven. Thank God your life is not filled with uncertainty. Why? Because Jesus by his grace, by his undeserved love, has already given you the gift of eternal life! How can this be? It is not because of anything you have done but it is because of what Jesus did for you on the cross. When Jesus died on the cross and rose from the grave he gave you the gift of eternal life with no strings attached. You do not have to work for your salvation, you do not have to earn it but it was given to you by grace. It is by the grace of Jesus and by faith in him that you are saved.
And so my friends, we can boast because we have eternal life, but we do not boast in ourselves but we boast in what Christ Jesus has done for us and the grace he has freely given us!
Saved by grace and faith alone in Christ Jesus our Lord, just like you,
